Book Review - Magician : Master (Riftwar Saga Book 2) by Raymond E. Feist

Magician : Master by Raymond E Feist

Book Title - Magician : Master
Series - Riftwar Saga Book #2
Author - Raymond E Feist

Genre - Fantasy
My Ratings - ★★★★★

Three years after the events of the first book 'Magician:Apprentice', Pug is now working as a slave in a swamp camp of the Empire of Tsuranuanni in the world of Kelewan. Meanwhile, in the Midkemia, war is still going on and Prince Arutha in Crydee embarks a journey to Krondor for aid as he suspects a powerful attack from Tsurani very soon. Back in Elvander, Tomas has a war within himself as he is going through his own struggle for not to give in to the power of Ashen Shugar, the ancient Dragon Lord whose armor he wore.

All of them have their own struggles and own path to choose, but will they able to survive and free the Kingdom from a very long ongoing war or will the kingdom be ruined in the midst of politics and the possibility of a civil war?

My Thoughts

After an okay read of the first book,I was not expecting much from this second one.But it really turns out to be one of the best fantasies I have read so far! What really made this book better than its predecessor was all the character arcs, well explained culture and very intriguing political dynamics within the society.
We had multiple perspectives and different plot lines for our characters from the previous book. Each had back and forth chapters dedicated in between Kelewan and Midkemia.

What I did not Like

There was nothing which really bothered me but there were few scenes I would have loved to see explored, but author did not invest much time getting into them.

What I did Like!

- My favourite and most engaging part was Pug's evolution as 'Great One'.We got to see a lot through his training and his coming to the power. All the history of Kelewan and how Tsurani emerges as a race among others, political structure and dynamics among the Kelewan and how it was described to us, was awesome and it was told as Pug came to power as 'Milamber'.
- Great Character Development especially Pug and Carline. Both had very different journey on very different worlds but at the end we can really see that they have come a very long way from what they started.I did not like Carline in the first book, she was really very immature and drama queen but in this book we got to see a very mature part of her, especially given what took place.

- I was disappointed when we had very few female characters introduced in the first one,but this one had many females (old & new) in the story.Though we still did not have them as main part of the plot but it was definitely an improvement from earlier.

- World Building and the way differences between both the world,Midkemia and Kelewan was showed,it was very interesting.I really liked that Raymond created two worlds with such bloody and great history and so different yet so similar in many areas. We got introduced to different species and races of Kelewan and the contrast between both worlds culture and beliefs was amazing.

- Romance.Though it is never an important and mostly overlooked factor for me in most of fantasies, as I tend to get very choosy in romance and most of my hated tropes are related to romance overall. This book had both insta-love and slow burning romances between the pairs but I really liked them unlike the unnecessary Love Triangle in the first book.Which was a plus point for me.

I would definitely recommend his book to all those fantasies lovers who really like world building and political intrigue within as well as across the nation. If you really like the tropes like 'Coming to Power','War Bound Nation',World Building and lots & lots of political intrigue again!
I will definitely say do not waste time and start with the first book,it will definitely worth the journey for coming to this point.

There are many ways to love someone. Sometimes we want to love so much we're not too choosy about who we love. Other times we make love such a pure and noble thing no poor human can ever meet our vision. But for the most part, love is a recognition, an opportunity to say, 'There is something about you I cherish.' It doesn't entail marriage, or even physical love. There's love of parents, love of city or nation, love of life, and love of people. All different, all love *
