Book Review | Strange the dreamer by Laini Taylor

Strange the dreamer by Laini Taylor

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Welcome to Weep.

MY THOUGHTS

So finally I read one of the old books on my TBR. It has been on it for so long and I always put off reading it due the hype surrounding it.

Overall, It was a four-star read for me. I really liked this one but was not in love.

Our story starts with Lazlo Strange, a librarian and dreamer, with the dream to know more about this unseen city everyone has forgotten. And one day he finally gets the chance to pursue this dream and we see how that turns out in rest of the story and get to know more about the people and history behind this forgotten land.

I loved the characters and the relationship dynamic between all of them. Insta- love, with the right amount of characterization does not bother me that much, so it was not an issue for me. I liked both Lazlo and Sarai together, and that other older couple too. Would love to see what will happen with them in the second one.

I wanted a lot more world building with the story. There was no map in the book which bothered me. Would loved to have some picturization in my mind of this world. But I really liked all the history surrounding Gods, would love to see it explored in its sequel!

Laini Taylor is very much known for her lyrical and whimsical writing, and I can see why so many people love it. It is just not something I was in the mood for I guess. It took me so much time to get invested in the story due to the writing. First 40% was very slow read for me, but I got into it eventually and finished the rest of the book quickly.

I will read the second book when I can finally appreciate her writing a lot more (which is not right now). So, even though that cliffhanger was quite a lot. I will wait for a little while to pick the second one (maybe Jan or Feb).

MY RATING - 4/5
