Book Review - Carrie by Stephen King

Carrie by Stephen King

'Carrie' is the first published (1974) novel of author Stephen King. This is one of his those classic horror novel which had been adapted into movie twice. Having watched the recent one, I knew the whole premise and while it was not that impressive - it was intriguing. I really wanted to read the whole story in detail.Overall,  it was pretty much a three star average read for me. So let's get into the detail of what my likes and dislikes are in this book!

What I really Liked

- Story Structure  :- The way Stephen king's depicted the whole story - In the form of newspaper articles to describe the past and future of the present story was interesting. I really liked how we got to know the aftermath of the incidents from different sources like police, neighbours, bystander etc.

- Premise  :- While I usually stay away from stories which have too much religion based preachiness in it. This one had the right amount of it with little creepiness of human mind which i found fascinating. That unsettling darkness of human psyche, especially from teenagers perspective was done okay.

What I did not like

- Writing :- I always have some trouble in getting fully into King's writing style, I faced this same problem with Misery. I usually like his overall story and premise, but in between the dragged descriptions , slowness and disconnection from the plot always makes the whole reading process for me a little difficult to finish his books quickly. This makes my reading very slow and dragged.

- Characters :- I did not feel any connection with characters. Even with Carrie, as our MC, I did not feel that attachment with her and I felt nothing for what happened with her. But I did hate most of her fellow students in school. But as a character driven reader, this made the whole reading experience even less enjoyable for me.

So overall - this one had both good and bad points for me but I can safely put this in an okay read list for me. As for Stephen King's other books, while I am not yet ready to read his big books (like 'The Stand' & 'IT'), I am going to pick his under 500 pages books for now for more interesting stories.

Overall Rating - 3 out of 5 Stars!
